What is Sociology?

Sociology is an inherently controversial endeavour.” -Anthony Gidden

Sociology, simply put, is the study of social life. It is a discipline that covers diverse aspects of human social relationships and social institutions to grasp the ways by which human action and consciousness shape, and are shaped by, surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology can be applied to the personal, societal and/or global to analyzes and explain important matters in our personal lives, our communities, and the world.

 Why Sociology?

Sociology offers a distinctive and enlightening way of seeing and understanding the social world in which we live and which shapes our lives. It looks beyond normal, taken-for-granted views of reality, to provide deeper, more illuminating and challenging understandings of social life.

It is within the context of the above definition and importance accorded to sociology that I will be covering a wide array of topics, from residential segregation, poverty and education to social media, environmentalism, and feminism. My goal is to expand my sociological imagination, indulge in my passion, and share my enthusiasm for sociology with others.
